Hannah Hughes named WiTA Driver of the Year
McColl’s Transport DG road train driver Hannah Hughes has come out on top, winning the inaugural Women in Trucking Australia (WiTA) Driver of the Year Award.
The award was initiated by WiTA to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8, and was open to all working female truckies.
Based in Perth, Hughes works for McColl’s Transport Chemical Division, doing dangerous goods runs to remote stations and mines, behind the wheel of her beloved Kenworth.
She travels the road alone, and at times needs to unload in the dark in the middle of nowhere, wearing a hazmat suit in extreme heat.
Hughes has five years of road train experience and often trains up new drivers too. Her can-do attitude and strong work ethic are an inspiration.
In announcing Hughes as the winner, WiTA commented, “WiTA would like to thank each and every one of the 21 Aussie female truckies who agreed to share their diverse and quintessentially Australian stories to national and international communities in celebration of our upcoming International Women’s Day Awards.
“The one thing all of these women have in common is their love of trucking. Women can’t be what they can’t see and with the support of these remarkable female truckies – over half a million people have had the opportunity to recognise trucking as the viable, diverse, challenging, professional and interesting career it is.”
