Dr Jayne O’Shea receives prestigious AW Roberts Award
Dr Jayne O’Shea was recently presented with the prestigious AW Roberts Award at the 2019 Australian Bulk Handling Awards in Melbourne last month.
The Award, which is presented in honour of Professor Alan Roberts, recognises the outstanding contribution of a young engineer to the field of bulk solids handling.
Dr Jayne O’Shea completed a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Newcastle (2005-2009), where she graduated with first class honours and was awarded the University Medal.
Jayne completed her PhD studies at Newcastle University (2010-2015), examining belt conveying system energy prediction models using the relaxation properties of rubber. Jayne developed a numerical model that calculates indentation rolling resistance based on dielectric relaxation properties instead of the commonly-used mechanical relaxation properties.
Jayne has continued to work as a Research Associate with the University of Newcastle and is affiliated with TUNRA Bulk Solids. She has been involved in designing test facilities that are in operation at NIER and currently performs research using numerical modelling to solve industrial problems.
Jayne has worked on numerous consulting and research projects involving numerical modelling, discrete element methods and scale modelling.
She is an author of five refereed journal papers and five conference papers and is currently a co-supervisor for two PhD students.
Jayne is also the mother of three young children ranging from the ages of 5 years to 12 weeks old and has been an example of life-work balance and an inspiration for young women who have an interest in a technical career but still want to pursue a family.
Dr O’Shea is a well-deserving recipient of this prestigious award aimed at young engineers for the outstanding contribution to the field of bulk solids handling. Her publications have been cited and widely used as reference and the impact of her work is noted worldwide. In addition, Jayne has wonderful working relationships with her colleagues, clients and students.
